FAQs
WE ARE USUALLY ASKED

  • Are you a 501(c)(3) Organization?
We are delighted to confirm that our organization has been granted tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (IRC). Consequently, contributions made to us are tax-deductible for donors as per IRC Section 170. Additionally, we are authorized to accept tax-deductible bequests, devises, transfers, or gifts under Sections 2055, 2106, and 2522 of the IRC.
  • If we make a monetary donation what is the money used for?
When you contribute monetarily, your funds are meticulously allocated to support the operational framework of Smartphones for Service Members, including the procurement of prepaid airtime for active duty US service members. Providing prepaid airtime for even a single soldier can entail expenses of up to $60 per month. Operational expenditures encompass maintaining our physical headquarters, remunerating our dedicated staff, and investing in essential third-party systems. These systems include sophisticated inventory management, robust security infrastructure, and advanced software for device erasure, inspection, and certification. As a nonprofit organization, our sustainability and capacity to serve those who valiantly protect our nation rely entirely on the generosity and contributions of our supporters. If you would like to donate, you can do so here: MONETARY DONATION or ELECTRONICS DONATION.
  • Do you actually give the electronics we donate to US service members?
The answer is affirmative, though the process involves specific considerations. Due to security risks and logistical challenges, directly sending electronic devices to U.S. military bases or war zones is not feasible. In fact, such actions might be restricted by the Department of Defense. Therefore, for active duty personnel, our focus is on providing prepaid airtime through SIM cards and phone cards, which is a more practical and secure approach. The primary recipients of the smartphones we collect are U.S. veterans in need, particularly those who cannot afford such technology, followed by the immediate families of U.S. service members. This includes providing essential technology like tablets and smartphones to their children. Our process is meticulous and thorough. Upon receipt, devices are rigorously inspected by Smartphones for Service Members’ skilled technicians. They undergo a comprehensive data-wiping procedure and are certified for reuse. However, some devices may not be suitable for redistribution due to reasons such as being locked by the carrier or blacklisted. In these instances, the devices are responsibly recycled as scrap electronics. The revenue generated from this recycling is then reinvested into purchasing prepaid airtime and supporting the operational costs of Smartphones for Service Members.
  • What type of devices can I donate?
We gladly accept donations of all electronic devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and more, regardless of their condition—whether they are gently used, damaged, or completely non-functional. We can also accept accessories, provided they are new and sealed in their original packaging. To help streamline the refurbishment process, we kindly request that donors perform a factory reset on their devices and remove any device locks before making a donation. • How can I join or help out?
We are consistently seeking dedicated volunteers to support our mission, and currently offer two distinct opportunities for involvement: Drop-Off Location Hosting: We invite business establishments to participate by hosting a donation barrel. This role involves overseeing a designated drop-off point within your premises, facilitating the collection of donated devices. Ambassadorship: This role entails acting as a representative for Smartphones for Service Members in your local community. Ambassadors are tasked with the crucial work of coordinating the placement and management of donation barrels in various business locations within their area. Volunteers are welcome to engage in either of these roles or a combination of both, contributing significantly to our efforts in supporting service members and their families. • What is a donation barrel?
A donation barrel is a secure, 55-gallon plastic container, distinctively branded for Smartphones for Service Members. It features a slit on the top, designed for the convenient deposit of electronic devices. Each barrel includes clear instructions displayed on its exterior, guiding donors on how to remove device locks before donation. These barrels are allocated to what we designate as "drop-off locations". As a registered drop-off location, we will dispatch these donation barrels to your business, allowing you to seamlessly integrate them into your establishment. This setup enables donors to conveniently contribute their devices during your standard business hours, facilitating an effective collection process. • What is an ambassador?

This role is pivotal in expanding our network of support and enhancing our mission's reach. If interested in becoming an ambassador please CLICK HERE.
